IUT represents more than 75 tenant organizations in over 50 countries and works to safeguard tenants’ interests worldwide. Its core mission is to realize the fundamental right of everyone to affordable, safe, healthy, and sound housing.

What we do

Networking and Advocacy

  • Policy advocacy — Influences housing policy at the EU level and globally (including through the UN Economic and Social Council, where we hold consultative status).
  • International cooperation — Facilitates networking, knowledge-sharing, and cooperation within the community of tenant organizations. Here, we identifify and prioritise policy issues through the IUT board.
  • Cooperates with members — analysing issues and influencing decisions that concern tenants and requires international cooperation.
  • Capacity building — Organizes and participates in conferences, arranges specialized working groups and initiatives to strengthen tenants’ rights and empowerment.
  • Information and awareness — Publishes and relays news on issues related to housing 
  • Promotes and arranges events — Including International Tenants’ Day, European Responsible Housing Awards and the IUT World Conference.

Partnerships

  • Partners with UN agencies, such as UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UN Center for Human Settlements – Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Partners with the ENHR – European Network for Housing Research and APNHR – Asia-Pacific Network for Housing Research.
  • Member of several EU networks and working groups related to housing, including   European Housing Forum, and the Housing Partnership for the EU Urban Agenda.
