German Tenants’ Association welcomes guidelines of the new EU Commission

Together with German Tenants Organisation (DMB), The IUT welcomes the announcement from Brussels to place the issue of affordable housing prominently on the EU policy agenda.

Ursula von der Leyen will remain President of the EU Commission for another five years. In her second term of office, housing policy is to play a greater role, and for the first time a member of the EU Commission is to be responsible for it. A programme for affordable housing is also to be developed. “We expressly welcome the announcement from Brussels that the issue of affordable housing is to be placed prominently on the EU policy agenda. However, the announcements must now be followed by action. In particular, the EU wants to emphasise the promotion and design of social housing subsidies. However, the Commission should also put its finger in the wound and tackle the issues that concern people in Europe: Unaffordable rents, misappropriation of living space by Airbnb & Co. and an excessively high housing cost burden – a plan for affordable housing must find answers to all of these issues. says Dr Melanie Weber-Moritz, Federal Director of the German Tenants’ Association (DMB).

Together with the International Union of Tenants (IUT), the German Tenants’ Association is in favour of a comprehensive approach to housing policy in Europe that focuses on the affordability and availability of housing and tenants’ rights. By tackling the housing crisis by 2030 through the promotion of public, social and affordable housing and adequate protection for tenants, the European Parliament, together with EU Member States and competent authorities, can work towards ensuring affordable and secure housing for all citizens, thereby promoting social cohesion and well-being across the continent.
