AIL Joins the Board of the International Union of Tenants (IUT)
The International Union of Tenants (IUT) is pleased to announce that the Associação dos Inquilinos Lisbonenses (AIL) has been elected as a member of the IUT Board. This marks an important step in AIL’s longstanding commitment to tenants’ rights and housing policies in Portugal and internationally.
Founded in 1924, AIL has been a key advocate for tenants in Portugal for a century. The organisation has played a crucial role in promoting fair housing policies, protecting tenants’ rights, and contributing to policy discussions at both national and international levels. AIL has been an active member of IUT for many years, demonstrating strong engagement and dedication to improving housing conditions.
“It is with great satisfaction that we announce the integration of AIL into the board of the IUT – International Union of Tenants, a natural step because it is the result of our long-standing participation in its activities, positions and interventions, highlighting the holding of its 22nd International Conference, which took place in Lisbon. in April 2023. This new stage in the life of the century-old AIL highlights and reinforces our commitment to defending and fulfilling the right to housing and tenants’ rights, now with an even more active voice at international and European level. We will continue to work and intervene so that citizens have access to affordable and decent housing for all, even more integrated and in international solidarity with other associations and collectives. Because together we are stronger”. Pedro Ventura, President of AIL
Marie Linder, President of IUT, warmly welcomed AIL to the Board: “AIL has been a highly active and engaged member of IUT for many years. Their expertise and commitment to housing rights have greatly contributed to our work. It is both gratifying and essential to have them as part of our Board, where they will bring valuable insights and energy to our collective mission.”
With AIL now on the IUT Board, the international tenants’ movement gains a strong and experienced voice that will further strengthen efforts to secure better housing policies and tenant protections worldwide.
