IUT Survey Results: European Election 2024 Spitzenkandidaten on Key Housing Issues
The International Union of Tenants is pleased to present the results of our questionnaire directed to the European lead candidates for the European Election 6-9th of June 2024.
Our goal is to compare political points of views, gather valuable insights on housing-, energy- and social policy and receive feedback from the Spitzenkandidaten (lead candidates) and the European political parties.
IUT goal for the upcoming European Parliament is to eradicate the housing crisis across Europe by 2030 IUT priorities for the EU elections. Click here to read more:
All over Europe, tenants and home seekers are impacted by the housing crisis. One third of the European citizens which corresponds to 150 million people, live in rental housing. Rents are unaffordable, and the costs of energy in poorly insulated homes have soared. Many individuals live with crippling uncertainty due to the lack of tenant rights, while others struggle to find a place they can call home
Crucial demands of the IUT are recognizing housing as a fundamental right, capping housing costs at 25% of income by 2030, setting a 30% quota for social and affordable housing, regulating short-term rentals, reducing housing financialization, and promoting tenure neutrality. Additionally, IUT supports a fair energy transition and equal access to energy-efficient housing.
All party groups in the European Parliament with a designated “Spitzenkandidat” – European People’s Party (EPP), the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (PES), Renew Europe (ALDE), Greens/European Free Alliance, the Left Group (GUE/NGL) – have received the IUT questionnaire. On this website you will find the answers of the lead candidates/European parties. We update the website with every answer received. So far, the following party groups have opted to respond to the questionnaire:
• The European Left (GUE / NGL)
• The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (PES)
• The European Green Party (EGP)
• The European Free Alliance (EFA)
The forthcoming European Parliament Elections offer a crucial choice for the tenants of Europe. They can opt for a united, open and peaceful Europe characterised by progress for all and rooted in the spirit of solidarity. The responses to this questionnaire are meant to show tenants who is willing to protect and empower them.
