50,000 demonstrate for the right to housing and affordable rents in Portugal

The Lisbon Tenants Association (AIL) participated in a historic demonstration for the right to housing and affordable rents in Portugal on 30th September 2023. This event saw 50,000 people take to the streets of Lisbon and other cities in the country to make their voices heard. Protesters are calling for rent controls and for rents to adjust to the average family income. The average rent for an apartment in Lisbon is 15 euros per m2. In other words, a normal-sized house (100m2) has a current rent of 1500 euros, which is equivalent to twice the minimum wage in Portugal. The average salary in Portugal is 1000 euros per month.
