President of the IUT visited the European Commission

Last week, the International Union of Tenants (IUT) met with Nicolas Schmitt, the EU Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, to discuss the housing market situation and the housing shortage within the European Union. Marie Linder, the President of IUT, presented a list of demands to the European Parliament for the 2024-2029 term, which Schmit agreed should be prioritized by the EU after the European Parliament elections. Also present at the meeting were Barbara Steenbergen, who heads the IUT’s Brussels office, and Johan Mirtorp, legal counsel and chairman of the IUT’s Housing Policy Working Group. Schmit highlighted the importance of housing as part of welfare and enabling a secure life, and he received a copy of the document compiled by IUT: “IUT Priorities for the European Parliament (2024-2029)”.
