Member focus: Nepal

As the IUT we represent global tenants’ organisations. We continue our series highlighting the work of some of our members, with Nepal and the Nepal Tenant Union (established 2006).

The NTU is an IUT member and part of the federation of tenants unions in Nepal (FTUN), which is an umbrella organisation of all district organisations. FTUN was established in 2015 by founder and chairman Shankar Koirala and now led by advocate Balbhadra Khanal. In Nepal, 40 % of all residents rent their homes in urban areas. The group have been active on representing tenants rights in the public arena as well as shaping the new national rental act which now provides more support to tenants as well as provides them with a greater number of rights.
